Where to Buy DMSO in Canada in 2019?
Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) has exploded in popularity in the United States, Europe, and Canada over the past five years. But why is it still so difficult to find in Canada?
How DMSO initially found & regained popularity
DMSO skyrocketed in popularity in the 1980s as major magazine articles and television profiles of it were done. It was the "it" product for years with tens of thousands of Americans flocking to grab it. DMSO solved just what those with continual inflammation sought: relief without the internal side effects of pills like Aspirin.
This began a large ramp up in DMSO sales. Suddenly all those crunchy, organic local stores that were beginning to start up in the 1980s began to carry DMSO. But DMSO never quite reached that tipping point of getting into pharmacy shelves and as time wore on the general public began to forget about DMSO. The economic equilibrium wasn't hit, so major players who would've taken DMSO to a larger audience failed to take notice of it.
However, with the rise of the internet many alternative health products began to be discussed again. Communities began to form that talked about products like DMSO, MSM, Magnesium oil, Iodine, and other potential solutions. You can still find hundreds of posts from people saying they loved using DMSO gels and liquids in the 80's, but had forgotten about it until recently.
So where can you find DMSO today in Canada?
Increasingly local, organic stores - those with barrels of locally-sourced vegetables, and almond milk in the fridge - will cary some DMSO. They will normally be in the form of a cream or a gel.
However, most folks looking for DMSO turn online (as you are right now) and they should for good reason: it's important to know who you're buying from. While DMSO is non-toxic, many brands use DMSO that is of 99.7% purity. This lower purity lowers the effectiveness of DMSO and can cause irritation upon contact with the skin. Likewise, many stores cary cheaper brands that put their products in plastic containers which can potentially have substances coating the inner liner leach into the DMSO.
When buying anything topical - but especially something that deals with inflammation as DMSO does - it's important to ensure that purity is high and the product is housed in appropriate packaging.
For those in Europe and the United States there are a number of different brands you can choose from that can be shipped into Canada (at an obviously high cost). Almost all cary at least 99.8% DMSO -- although we always recommend purchasing a 99.99% DMSO to ensure absolute purity as already mentioned.
But in Canada we're a much smaller market than our friends to the South and East.
That's why we created Pastoral in 2012. To provide premium, high-quality DMSO that no longer has to be imported from abroad and where you won't have to pay an arm and a leg for shipping. Our goal is to do DMSO the right way for all of those who still remember its effectiveness, or who have been told by others about it.
